Guatemala

The border with Mexico,  it was something out of your typical movie of Central America. Hot, crowded, dirty, and loud. However, it was by far the most efficient border crossing. There were even computers at the aduana.

We drove to a town called Cotzumalguapa, near Santa Lucia. We found a nice motel with a pool and TV for only $15 a night. While it was only 3 p.m. we did not want to risk driving at night. Guatemala is as cheap as its reputation and is really an interesting place (Guatemala has a reputation for being dangerous, but its hard to believe it, the people are very nice and friendly.)

Went to lake Atilan.  The Mayan Indians come there to sell their hand made goods. Went to see some ruins, which meant going through a sugar cane field. In Guatemala we took the costal route. While many people told us not to do this, we came right after they paved it, so it was perfect the entire way. As with every country though, the road conitions change yearly, so by the time you read this the roads could be in poor shape again.
